British Music Rights welcomes study on the economic performance of the UK’s creative industries
26th June 2007

British Music Rights (BMR) has welcomed the report “Staying Ahead: The Economic Performance of the UK’s Creative industries” developed by the Work Foundation.

BMR particularly supports the Work Foundation’s recommendations that future policy should support education and skills, and the intellectual property framework.

Emma Pike, Chief Executive of British Music Rights, said: ‘We welcome this report, which acknowledges the overwhelming importance of the creator, not only for the creative industries themselves but also for the whole economy.

‘The creator is the primary driver of a highly structured and vast value chain on which the UK economy increasingly relies. The value of the creative industries to UK PLC is now recognised as comparable to the financial sector.’

The music industry has been at the forefront of policy developments, and British Music Rights has been working on the underlying drivers of the music industry since its inception in 1996.

Further commenting on the study, Pike said: ‘We are delighted that this independent review accepts our key beliefs about the importance of a strong copyright regime; adequate finance mechanisms, and a competitive environment for UK composers and publishers.

BMR is looking forward to working with Government to shape policies to further the development and growth of the creative industries.
