How and when is copyright in a musical work created? What happens when the music and lyrics are written by more than one person? Where do moral and typographical rights fit into the equation? How are copyrights used and exploited and why do creators and publishers need collecting societies?
This Own It event in collaboration with the British Academy of Composers & Songwriters, Music Publishers Association and Swan Turton law firm is aimed at songwriters, composers and publishers.

Stuart Barry
Stuart was a founding partner of Swan Turton in 2005. He works mainly on music related matters and his clients include major and independent record companies, music publishers, record producers, recording artists, writers and internet companies. Mick Leeson
Mick became a full-time songwriter in 1980 along with his writing partner Peter Vale. Notable artists to have recorded their songs include Ray Charles, The Commodores, Maxi Priest, Paul Young and Chaka Demus & Pliers and Lemar. Mick was on the Board of PRS from 1993 to 2006. He is a Committee Member of the PRS Members' Fund and a Board Director of the British Academy of Composers and Songwriters. http://www.britishacademy.com
Fred Bolza
(Broadcast/Online Development Director, MCPS-PRS Alliance)
Fred is the Broadcast & Online Development Director for the MCPS-PRS-Alliance. His role is to support the development of effective schemes for licensing music in the digital age by constantly monitoring the ways in which music is made, distributed and consumed as well as how the underlying business models can work together in the context of convergence. Prior to joining the Alliance one year ago, Fred worked for 7 years as a management consultant advising ISPs, mobile operators and media companies on strategy. His interest in music is not just professional as he currently DJs a monthly jazz night, writes about obscure records and used to be in Canadian garage punk “sensations” The Cryptics. http://www.mcps-prs-alliance.co.uk
