The Mercury Music Prize was established in 1992 to reward 'innovation and creativity' in British music and has become one of the major music events in the UK. The prize is open to all types of music including pop, rock, folk, jazz and contemporary classical and the emphasis is on the music, its writers and musicians. 

Previous winners include Primal Scream, Suede, M People, Portishead, Pulp, Badly Drawn Boy, PJ Harvey, Ms Dynamite, Dizzee Rascal, Franz Ferdinand, and Arctic Monkeys.
